Further technology know-how...

In trying to advance my GAME plan (and my homework) I have started a wiki page and some of my members have done some great things already! A new cool slide show greets the new viewer and is a great resource to any teacher (Thank you Sherrie)! Further, other comments and questions from my wiki-colleagues have helped me to further my thought processes in regard to how a wiki will work in my classroom. :)

I don't know if I need to make any adjustments to my plan yet. I have much more to learn and I believe the process of making this PBL, using the wiki and continuing to read and discuss is helping me to advance my goals.

How do you use the wiki's in your classroom. Has it enhanced your lessons? I am struggling with finding a good purpose for the wikis, making it truly beneficial in the classroom. As far as collaboration, so far GoogleDocs has been so much more user friendly and less time consuming.

  2. Honestly, my students have still not done it this year. I am still thinking through all the logistics. The advantage to the wiki (not knowing what google docs is really like) is that it allows for a good website to keep up on all things concerned with the class, homework, material we have covered as well as provide a space for them to do work collaboratively and creatively. They may expand on previous assignments at a later date and respond to classmates sites. They may include links that they think are interesting/relevant to their topic or story.

On the down side, due to a lot of the sources here at Walden, I was under the impression that the students would either already know how to use this technology or would take to it like ducks to water and that has not been the case. It makes me wonder if they are not funded by some of the big electronics corporations. I realize that more technology is the way things are heading but businesses don't seem to want to train their employees but rather have them come out knowing how to use the stuff they haven't even created yet. Hmph! All I can do is sigh and get busy on ways to best teach the technology programs right along side the content. I guess this is where our biggest part to play is to teach our students "how to learn."

  3. It's interesting, because my third grade son and my fifth grade daughter are very comfortable using a class wiki (not only reading assignments, but also contributing comments) while many high school students I know do not seem to be as familiar with this process. As you say, all we can do is keep trying to integrate the necessary technology into the curriculum we teach, to prepare our students for the business place of the future.
